If you are shopping for car accessories then don't forget to buy a good pair of steering wheel covers for your luxury sedan. These car accessories come in a variety of fabrics including plastic, cotton, leather and silk. The range of colors available in these accessories is quite staggering. You can any color including majestic white, jet black and mosaic color. Most car owners consider these items a luxury but actually they are a necessity. This accessory will not only enhance the look of your car but also improve your grip on the steering wheel. Made of cast iron, these accessories are very sensitive towards weather. It becomes hot in summer and chill in winter. You won't like to touch this wheel if it is not covered.

When decorating your car with new seat covers, mat and flooring, don't forget to buy matching steering wheel covers. Choose the one that matches perfectly with the interior of your car. Leather covers are very beautiful and they can work well in all weather condition. These accessories made up of leather are some expensive but you should buy them if you can. Car owners with limited budget can consider buying these accessories made up of cotton fabrics. Cotton covers also work well in all weather conditions and they come in a massive array of colors, designs and patterns.

If you want to use ravishing steering wheel covers then look no further than the plastic coverings. Such accessories are simply irresistible because they are glossy and feel like silk when touched. They are available in amazing colors and designs. The good thing about such items is that they are affordable. But these items are not suitable for harsh weather conditions. These accessories become redundant when the temperature is too low or too high. You can use them on your wheel in spring season.

When choosing steering wheel covers, you should keep in mind the model of your car and quality of the accessories you are going to buy for your vehicle. These items should be compatible with the sofa cover, mat and flooring. These accessories made up of leather are the best because they can mix well with any setting. Also they are suitable for all weather conditions. If you find such items to be too expensive to buy then consider items made up of cotton fabric. Can The Wrong Car Cleaning Products Damage Your Car?

If you pay a visit to your local auto parts store you will discover a wall full of car care and detailing products. It's no different on the web. Most retailers of car detailing supplies have so many cleaners, polishes and waxes that it's nearly impossible to tell the difference between even the most basic items. So how do you know what works and what doesn't? More importantly, can the wrong products damage your car?

Practically speaking, there are only a few categories of detailing products. For ease of discussion you can break it down into cleaners, polishes and protectants. A few products have more than one purpose. Chemicals that clean and protect in a single step are a good example.

Car Wash

A car wash is a gentle soap that's designed to clean the exterior of your car without removing wax protection. A soap is not the same as a detergent. A detergent will remove wax protection with a single use. That's why you should not use a household cleaner like Dawn dish washing liquid, unless you're planning to wax your car.

I recommend selecting a car wash soap based on what works best for you. You may need to try a few because they all react a bit differently to water quality conditions. That said, all of the major brand names are pretty close in quality. I like Meguiar's Gold Class. Mothers California Gold is another popular brand.

Tire and Wheel Cleaners

A tire cleaner is a detergent that has enough cleaning power to cut through old tire dressing and the road grunge film that builds up on tires and turns them brown. Be careful. If you find a product that contains petrochemicals or bleach, stay clear. These chemicals will really do a number on fine alloy wheels and they cause tires to age prematurely.

To properly clean your wheels, look for an all-purpose cleaner or an all-purpose wheel cleaner. Don't use an acid based cleaner unless you have chrome wheels. If you don't use a cleaner containing acid correctly it will permanently damage your wheels.

Engine and Undercarriage Cleaners

Most people don't clean their engines, but it's a great habit to get into because it helps reduce corrosion. Once a year of so is perfect. It takes strong chemicals to remove dirt, grease, oils and grime. The best cleaner for this job was d-limonene, but it is an environmental hazard, so it's banned in many areas. I suggest a detergent cleaner, not petroleum, such as Meguiar's new engine cleaner. They really did a good job formulating it for new engines with plastic covers and other composite components.

Leather and Vinyl Cleaner

Leather and vinyl are common throughout car interiors. Both materials are very durable, but the sun, dirt and oils from our bodies can cause rapid deterioration. Skin oils cause vinyl and leather to age and discolor, so frequent light cleaning is necessary to avoid issues. It's difficult to tell where real leather ends and plastic or vinyl begins theses days, so I recommend using a product designed for both. Lexol is the recognized leader.

Upholstery and Carpet Cleaners

For your carpet and fabric finishes, including carpeted floor mats, you can choose sprays or foams. There's no easy answer here because there are advantages and disadvantages to each. Foams have the ability to push dirt to the surface where it can be vacuumed away. They also put less liquid into the fibers so the carpet or fabric dries faster. Conversely, liquid cleaners thoroughly wetting the fabric and carpet fibers for deep cleaning. I prefer liquid cleaners.

Glass and Plastic Cleaners

Ammonia-based glass cleaners should not be used on your vehicle. It's harsh on interior car surfaces and it's a health risk when used in confined spaces. A better solution is a damp microfiber towel. They clean glass without using chemical cleaners. You can clean clear plastic surfaces, including window tint film, with a glass cleaner as long as it does not contain ammonia or alcohol. These chemicals will ruin clear plastic. A better solution is to use a plastic cleaner, such as Plexus.

Paint Polish

Paint polish, not car wax, is what gives paint its high gloss shine. Choose a car polish that matches the needs of your car's paint finish. New cars need a fine polish that cleans more than polishes. This type of polish is typically called a pre-wax cleaner. If you have swirl marks, fine scratches or water spots, choose a polish that specifically addresses these problems, but don't use heavy rubbing compounds.

Clay Bar

About ten years ago a new product came onto the market for general use that cleans better than car polish. It's called detailing clay, and it works like an erasure. Using a spray lubricant to prevent sticking, you simply rub the clay bar over the paint finish to make it clean and slick again. All of the bonded contamination transfers directly to the clay.

Car Wax

The final step is waxing. These days, "car wax" refers to any coating you apply to protect the paint. Synthetic waxes are also called paint sealants. Be leery of false claims on paint sealants. Too many products claim to last a year or more, and it's simply not true. Regardless of any claim, your vehicle needs regular cleaning and waxing to prevent surface oxidation. Waxing three to four times a year is optimal.

Alloy Wheel Designs

Alloy wheels have become popular these days and come in many designs and sizes. High quality alloy wheels are known to improve brake performance, are heat conducive, and offer outstanding performance for cornering and acceleration in undesirable weather conditions. Audi wheels are German-made, and since the early 2000's have been manufactured using a mixture of magnesium and aluminum because they are lighter and provide top overall performance while driving.

They were built using steel prior to this, although they were heavier and damaged easier. When selecting alloys spend particular consideration to the design you buy. Since there are so many styles available on the market it could be confusing when deciding on the right match for your automobile. They enhance the appearance of the car or truck, and depending on the style purchased, could make your wheels seem to be wider than they really are. They might be more expensive than other kinds of wheels, but make up for it with comfort and different features. They may be more visually appealing than standard wheels and, due to their finish, require regular maintenance.

It really is cheaper to maintain alloy wheels rather than refinish them. Alloy wheels provide high quality and reliability, offering top class performance for the driver. Some kinds of Audi alloy wheels turn on an axis, so are extremely unique in their appearance. They are usually seen on high-end and sports cars. Race car drivers use them because of their light weight. Steel is heavier and damages easier, but remains manufactured today. Users of magnesium and aluminum alloy wheels discover that they get better gas mileage since they're lighter.

Deep dish wheels have an outer lip and rim that's deeply set and are made from magnesium and aluminum. They are the best option for German cars and come in a wide variety of designs and sizes. Professional installation is suggested when purchasing alloys. They may be purchased online and can often be found for cheaper prices. They are available in many different finishes, from the regular machine face finish, center-gun metal or inner-gun metal or external chrome finish. Also, they are available painted in black or silver. All are attractive and increase the value of your car or truck if you should choose to sell it later on. You may purchase alloy wheels by the wheel, or in sets of four, although there are discounts available when purchased in groups of four.

How Recycling of Automotive Chemicals Benefits the Ozone Layer

Nowadays, living green is on the top of everyone's agenda due to the issues like global warming, loss of rain forests and depletion of ozone layer. Recycling automobile fluids and parts, aluminum cans, plastic bottles, plastic grocery bags, and newspapers makes a wonderful way to save the environment as it helps decrease emission of greenhouse gases into the environment and prevents pollution. Recycling helps conserve natural resources and saves energy. Moreover, it reduces the need for incineration and helps sustain the environment for future generations. Another benefit of recycling is that it saves landfill space.

When it comes to recycling items from your automobile, three major things that need your immediate attention include car coolant system, batteries and motor oil. These items contain chemicals that can cause major problems in our landfills and damage the environment if they are not disposed of properly.

Coolant recycling makes a green technology to reuse an old coolant. Professional coolant recyclers filter your old coolant, clean it using one of these several methods, and then add the proper chemicals and additives to restore the corrosion inhibitors so that it will perform like new. The main ingredient of the coolant is ethylene glycol or propylene that never wears out. In the open air, it will slowly evaporate and breakdown into carbon dioxide and water. Unstable oxygen molecules from carbon dioxide can combine with nitrogen oxide gases and other volatile organic compounds in the air, forming highly reactive and unstable molecules that can damage ozone layer. Ozone occurs naturally in the earth's upper atmosphere which helps protect life on earth by absorbing UV radiation that can damage crops and cause cataracts and skin cancer. However, mixing used propylene with water and inside an air-tight cooling system may help prevent damage to ozone layer.

Car batteries contain harmful metals and chemicals such as mercury, alkaline, nickel cadmium, lead acid, lithium and nickel metal hydride. If not disposed of properly, they can pollute the environment and evaporate into the atmosphere. For example, if car batteries are not recycled and are used in landfills, the cadmium and mercury will eventually seep into water supplies, creating health hazards for both livestock and human population. When water containing the harmful compounds will evaporate into the atmosphere, the vapors will combine with unstable oxygen molecules, forming highly reactive toxic molecules that may further damage the already compromised ozone layer. The first step in the recycling process of batteries is removal of the combustible material with a fire thermal oxidizer. In the next step, the metals in batteries are heated to liquefy. The final step is the shipment of liquid metals to metal recovery plants where chromium, nickel and alloys are separated and used for the manufacturing of other metal products.

It is also important to recycle motor oil properly because of the dangerous toxins and harmful gases emitted by used oil. The best option for motor oil recycling is to visit your nearest local oil and lube shop that recycles oil. Make sure that you transport the oil in a plastic container.

The Science of Car Cleaning Products

In most cases you can clean and protect your vehicle with just a few basic car cleaning products. In this article you will learn some of the science behind auto detailing supplies so you can clean your car the right way.

Soil can be organic, non-organic or petroleum. That's important to know. If you can identify the soil you're dealing with you can use the right cleaner. When you use the correct cleaner most stains come out with ease.

Take organic soil as an example. Organic basically means that it contains carbon. Stains in this group include proteins, animal fat, body oil, mold, yeast, insects, bacteria and excrement. The classic example is the batch of hot French fries your three year old spilled on the back seat. That's an organic soil stain.

Non-organic soil does not have carbon molecules. Most often we find these stains on the exterior the vehicle. A good example that frustrates most of us from time-to-time are water spots from minerals. Acid rain spots fall into this category, as well.

Finally we get to petroleum. These soils come from substances that do not contain or cannot be mixed with water. Motor oil, grease and road tar are the most common petroleum soils. Note that chewing gum is also a petroleum soil.

Now that you are aware of the three types of stains we can begin to discuss cleaners. Let me tell you, there are a lot of them. Unfortunately, no one has invented a true all-purpose automotive cleaner. Due to the many different surfaces and soils, automotive cleaners are complex mixtures of chemicals blended for a particular type of surface or soil. The most common chemicals used include surfactants, solvents, wetting agents, saponifiers and chelators.

Soaps and detergents are made using a surfactant. It's an agent that has two compounds. One molecule is attracted to the soil itself, while the other loves water. The compound that's attracted to water is a hydrophile. Its job is to surround the soil. The soil attracting agent is a hydrophobe. Its purpose is to break up the soil so the hydrophile can get to it and make it float away.

All cleaners needs a solvent of one sort or another to dissolve dirt and carry it away. Some solvents, including mineral spirits, work on petroleum soils and may be necessary on surfaces damaged by water. Did you know that the most common solvent used in cleaners is water?

Speaking of water, any solution that has a water base or mixes with water has a pH level. The term pH is merely a measurement of the relationship between hydrogen ions and hydroxyl ions. When you have more hydrogen ions than hydroxyl ions, that's an acid. Likewise, if you have more hydroxyl ions than hydrogen ions it's an alkali. Knowing this is important because any cleaner that falls at either end of the pH scale can cause serious damage.

The pH scale runs from 0 to 14. The lower half of the scale represents acids and the upper half represents alkalis. As you might have guessed, water is neutral and has a pH of 7.0.

If you know the pH of a cleaner you will know where you can use it. A carpet shampoo should have a pH around 8 or 9, whereas an all-purpose wheel cleaner should be between 12 and 14. Try using a cleaner made for wheels on your car's fabric and carpet will make a pretty big mess.

Now that you know the basics you can better understand why there are so many car cleaning products and auto detailing supplies. Your vehicle has many different surfaces and they have different cleaning requirements. You can avoid using harsh cleaners by using basic protection. Wax the exterior several times each year and protect the interior with appropriate products. For the ultimate in protection, use an outdoor car cover or a waterproof car cover when you park outside.

Car Detailing Tips

A Porsche service center or Audi dealer can perform a thorough detailing of your car without causing damage to the finish. But if you are considering detailing your own car, rather than taking it to your Audi dealership, here are a few things to keep in mind.

Here are five of the most important things to keep in mind when detailing your car.

Get the proper supplies.

It may cost anywhere between $30 and $70 for quality detailing products. Your Audi dealer or Porsche service center likely already has these products on hand. For the do-it-yourself types, here are some of the basics:

Multiple microfiber cloths or mitts: Use different cloths for different parts of the car; you don't want wax from the body of the car smearing up the windows, or grit from the wheels scratching your paint.

Auto detailing soap: Don't settle for dish detergent, as it can be too harsh and harm the finish.

A toothbrush: A toothbrush is great for removing debris such as leaves and bugs from the small cracks and crevices of your car.

Cotton Swabs: These are handy for cleaning out things such as coin holders and other places where gunk accumulates.

Use two buckets.

A good Porsche service professional will tell you that using two buckets can save you a lot of time. This helps you avoid reintroducing grime onto your car's surface with dirty suds.

An Audi dealer will often recommend also using separate cloths for the top and bottom of the car. The beltline is the mid-point between the top and bottom of the car; most road grime accumulates below this line.

Clean in the correct order.

To prevent getting parts of the car you just cleaned dirty again, work in the same order that your Audi dealership or Porsche service specialist does:

1. Interior. This will help prevent getting dirt or dust on the outside of the car while cleaning the carpets.

2. Wheels, roof, windows, hood and trunk. Wash the wheels first, as this is likely the dirtiest part of the car. Then, with a different rag or mitt, take care of the roof, then the hood, and then the trunk. Rinse from top to bottom. For the "sheet rinsing" effect, shield the nozzle from touching the surface of your car with your fingers to prevent scratching, while holding the nozzle within an inch or two of the surface. Wash the fenders and doors. Re-rinse the entire car, and wait for it to dry completely before moving on to the final step.

3. Polish and wax. Finally, apply polish and wax. The polish should be used first to bring out the color in any oxidized spots.

While having a clean car is a reward in itself, it also helps maintain the vehicle's resale value should you decide to trade it in at your Audi dealership one day. So if you will be doing the job yourself instead of taking it to your Audi dealer or Porsche Service center for detailing, follow these tips to get the job done right with minimal damage.

Get Ready For Winter With These Two DIY Auto Projects

Summer is over and fall is in full swing, that can only mean one thing: winter is rapidly approaching. To get prepared for winter you should take a couple steps to make your harsh weather driving safer. Here are two quick and easy projects that you can do in two hours or less to get you car ready.

1. Restore your headlights: On the market today there are several options for headlight restoration kits. Your local parts warehouse store should have a section in the car cleaning aisle dedicated to these products. That a look at a few of them and select the one that best fits your budget and requirements based on headlight haze. Depending on which one you choose you may have between 15 minutes and two hours of work ahead of you. The simple liquid solutions will often only remove the lightest of imperfections from your headlight lenses, but it is a good first step. If it works, great. If not, they are relatively inexpensive and you'll just have to move on to one of the more complete kits. These kits include several different pieces of sandpaper, from coarse to fine. You start with the most coarse and work your way up to the finest one. Once you are complete you should have headlight lenses that look to be new.

2. Rotate your tires: This may be one of the best DIY things you can do for your car. Most tire or repair shops want upwards of $30 to rotate the tires for you. That is just silly since it is something that you can easily do yourself. You will need some basic tools which probably came with your car: a jack and a lug nut wrench plus a jack stand. Understand that the jack and lug nut wrench included with your car is more meant for emergencies so you may want to pick up a floor jack that is rated for the weight of your car and a better lug nut wrench. It will save you a lot of grief and time if you do. An aside about the jack and lug nut wrench in your car, this would also be a good time to test them out and make sure that they are properly lubricated. When you are stranded on the side of the road is not the time to make that discovery, I know because I have actually been there before....not fun. Once you have all of your tools ready, start by loosening the lug nuts on all of the wheels; just loosen, not remove. Next following the instructions in your owners manual, jack up one corner of the car on the designated jack spots. Place the jack stand in a secure location and remove that wheel. Leave the jack stand in place, lower the jack and jack up the next corner. Your owner's manual should have a diagram showing you where to place the removed wheel. There is an exception to this rule, if you have directional tires or rim pattern. In these cases just swap back to front on the same side, otherwise follow the owner's manual. Secure the wheel in its new location with the lug nuts and lower those two corners. Proceed with the next two wheels. Your owner's manual may suggest a pattern where you move the drivers rear wheel to the passenger front and the passenger front to the passenger rear. In this case you will need two jack stands. Once all of the wheels are back on and the car is on the ground you can tighten all of the lug nuts. You will need a torque wrench for this. Follow the owner's manual for a guide as to the torque setting. I always go over the lug nuts twice to be sure that nothing is left loose. You will also want to check them again after 100 miles or two days, whichever comes first.

Versatile Auto Detailing Products for Super-Clean Vehicles

Auto detailing equipment refers to highly advanced car wash systems that simplify the cleaning process and boost the end results with their innovative technologies. Reputable distributors now offer an exciting range of high-performance, durable and reliable auto detailing machines along with powerful chemicals. This wide range enables you to choose the right version depending on your specific requirements.

If you are engaged in the car detailing business and are looking for durable and powerful yet versatile and user-friendly equipment that will help increase the productivity of your employees, you must definitely take a look at the advanced car wash products offered by leading suppliers. In addition to boosting your profits, these machines will help keep your business a step ahead of your competitors.

Powerful Pressure Washing Products

Until recently, there were two kinds of products available for auto detailing professionals - steam cleaners and pressure washers. However, both these categories of machines did not have the right features required for proper car washing. Steam cleaning machines had the right temperatures for dissolving tough dirt, but their pressure levels were inadequate. And although pressure washers had high pressure levels, extremely high pressure levels would damage vehicles. As a result, these machines failed to provide superior cleaning results. All that changed with the launch of steam pressure washers.

With the aim to simplify car detailing applications, reputable distributors presented advanced steam pressure cleaners that expertly combined the cleaning power of steam with high pressure levels. While the hot steam dissolves dirt deposits, the high pressure levels help wash away the softened particles. Such car wash equipment is capable of generating temperatures as high as 250oF and pressure levels of 1000 psi. The adequate pressure levels guarantee exceptional cleaning without damaging the vehicle's paint or causing scratches on the exteriors.

These car pressure washers are also notable for their low flow rates that keep water usage to a minimum without compromising on the quality of cleaning. The low flow rates of car wash equipment enables detailing of surfaces like automobile engines that contain delicate components. Since low water usage also helps eliminate any kind of wastage, you need not worry about EPA fines. In fact, while a typical garden hose ejects around 6-10 gallons of water in a minute; these mobile car wash products eject as little as 0.5 GPM. Imagine the huge volume of water you will be able to save every single day!

For added versatility, the new generation of car pressure washers features tri mode capabilities. This enables the steam pressure cleaners to eject cold water, hot water or steam as per your specific requirement. So, you can choose steam or hot water when you need to clean off grease deposits on vehicle exteriors. Also, when it comes to maintaining the detailing bays, you can opt for cold water.

Leading suppliers offer many high-grade auto detailing products through their online stores. In addition to being efficient and powerful, these auto detailing systems are also unbelievably affordable.

Daimer Industries is a leading supplier of car detailing machines. Daimer provides a complete range of car wash equipment including mobile car wash equipment, auto detailing equipment and many more.

Psycho Therapy - Citroen Rally Kit

Take one standard Citroen DS3 150, add extra original equipment parts, create utter turbo-nutter Frankenstein.

AN ALMOST NONCHALANT FLICK IS all it takes, like wafting away a mildly offensive smell. The merest forward brush with the fingernails of the right hand and the gearbox snaps down a gear, then another, mechanical teeth launching into one another with a savagery that belies the subtlety of the initial action.

The engine howls through what sounds like a straight-through exhaust, frothing what little vortices of dust remain undisturbed by the passing of semi-slick tarmac race tyres. The brake pedal is a solid block, with the travel, modulation and feel of the average doorstep - it takes a truly mighty stomp for any result - but when it comes, it has the effect of hitting the actual house. There's a soft and entirely involuntary "oof".

Five-point harnesses tighten just enough to remind you there's a crotch strap, then it's time for a sharp, violent turn of the Alcantara wheel and a long, pint-pulling yank of the yellow- topped staff of a hydraulic handbrake. The car is suddenly facing the other way. There is no lurch, or slack, or hesitation. It just... obeys.

Another little appreciative huff at the sheer, sinewy tightness of it all, and then, when the throttle is forced inelegantly to the bare-metal footwell with a clack, there's the briefest eternity of dreamy aural respite before the engine shrieks, and the front differential fires the car away, reaming the tarmac clean in search of grip. The noise is industrial, the vibration ridiculous, the experience elegant, intimately brutal.

Welcome to the rally-car experience. And this is the real deal. Actual serious rally car. I guarantee that if you like cars, you'd love it. It's also an experience exclusively reserved for professional rally drivers, or the professionally wealthy. We mortals will never get to drive a car like this rally-prepped Citroen DS3 R3, because it's all bogglingly expensive, high-end rally tech that's about as far removed from buyable road- car reality as it's possible to be. Right?

Not quite. Because you can order one from your local Citroen dealer. Today. Now.

This is a scarcely believable, but entirely correct fact. Pop into your local Citroen dealer, and you can buy, off the metaphorical shelf, a DS3 with a 210bhp, 2581b ft racing engine. You can also buy, from Citroen and specifically engineered for the DS3, a six-speed sequential push-me-pull-you paddle-operated gearbox, a multi-point FIA-approved rollcage, fully adjustable coil-over suspension, a steering rack so direct it feels like it lashes your wrists to the steering arms, polycarbonate side windows and a whole raft of other slightly obsessive go-faster goodies that'll make your rally-fan eyes water.

A manufacturer-backed Frankenstein. An Original Equipment monster. Fit everything, and what you end up with is basically a WRC car minus a slug of power and a driven axle. Which is a bit of a surprise, if I'm honest. You can take a standard DS3 - a lovely if slightly flowery hatch - and butch it up with official equipment to the point even the most aggressive of supercars will gently back away from it in a car park, muttering about 'things to do'. The two litde characters 'R3' have the same effect Sambuca has on middle-aged women. It transforms something very happy and normal into a slavering, rabid, unstoppable beast.

There's a reason. The DS3 R3 has been conceived as a fast-food version of a full-blown Citroen rally car, available from Citroen Racing - in turn accessible through any Citroen dealer. It complies with FIA 'R3T' regulations, so it uses the original steel monocoque of the production car, as well as the 1.6-litre THP four-cylinder turbo engine. In fact, from the outside, if you remove all the jazzy decals, the only changes are rally wheels, a roof-mounted snorkel (the windows are all polycarbonate and don't wind down, so it gets oven-hot in minutes), and the race-style mini wing mirrors.

The other stuff is slightly more involved. What Citroen Racing does, during a full 500- hour conversion, is hollow out a Citroen DS3.

'Sport Chic' THP 150, scraping out the comfort and frailty of the road car and injecting essence of bull testicle into the rest. The shell is re-welded for extra strength, and roughly three miles of FIA rollcage is webbed throughout the interior, resulting in a torsional rigidity value somewhere above that of a four-metre block of granite. It's like a colossal spider with a geometry fetish has gone bonkers with a pipe-bender. So it doesn't flex much. In any direction.

It doesn't bounce much, either - especially in this 'tarmac' set-up. An example: sit on the rear tailgate (noting in passing that the bonnet and boot are all held shut with pins and clips rather than anything as weighty as a 'mechanism'), and the DS3 R3 doesn't move. At all. It's like sitting on a railway-sleeper bench. It's laughably hard - and about the only way you can tell there's any pressure anywhere in the car is that the plastic windows flex minutely. But it says much about the R3's intentions. A bench-tested 1.6 is slotted in the front, rearranged and stripped naked to make 'race maintenance' easier. It sounds tough, but most of the major engine components are standard, or closely related to what you get in the normal car: cylinder head, valves, turbo, injectors, manifolds - all pretty much the same. The air filter, camshafts, pistons, rods and flywheel are all competition-spec, though, and there are various upgrades to cooling.

That amazing gearbox is a six-speed sequential, push to go down, pull to go up, press the little red button and push/pull to get neutral or reverse. It's based on the ergonomics of the full-on C4 WRC and poles through a ZF self- locking diff that means you have to hang on for dear life when going fast on a bumpy road. Or overcorrecting wayward handbrake turns. Ahem.

The only really tricky thing about it is the clutch. The pedal itself is up and left in the footwell - you only really need it to start off during a proper rally stage - but try to do normal car stuff, like dawdle, or low-speed messing about, and it'll shudder and grumble and complain, and, unless you're mighty generous with the revs, stall. You get used to it, but it's a reminder that there are still compromises if you want the most instant reactions when going very quickly. You can monitor virtually any important parameters from the Magneti Marelli digi-module mounted in the middle of the dash, scrolling through six pages of multiple-channel information for everything from oil temperature to current gear position. At one point, I'm almost sure it flashed up a panicky crimson message about excessive turbo temp, but seeing as it was in French and I couldn't translate it, I was able to ignore it until it went away.

In keeping, start-up is somewhat more complicated than the twist'n'go of the regular DS3. First, prime the master circuit with a flick switch in the panel between the seats, then arm the hydraulics with the next toggle along. Once there's sufficient pressure, press the starter button top left, and the motor bangs into life like a misfired mortar. The noise is ridiculous. A saw-toothed burr that vengefully burrows through your ears. And the vibration. As the engine idle waxes and wanes like a fast tide, the pitch and frequency of the wobbles that suffuse the cabin roll from dirty big chugs to a concerted attack from a flock of miniature dentist drills. It's like stuffing the top half of your body into a metal dustbin and lying on a belt sander with a broken speed control. At certain points, the vibration is... not unpleasant. At others - just as the clutch bites on take-off, for instance - it sets your teeth so far on edge you fear they may shatter. But the R3 makes the regular car feel like a complete pudding. It's utterly addictive. Actually painful, stupidly extreme for normal use, but so much fun it makes you extra pleased with your senses.

The catch? Well - as ever - there are a few. Firstly, the kit is about real competition rather than real life, so it's a bit raw for the daily grind. Were you to run one on the road - and yes, the car is entirely road-legal - you'll become a fractured, crippled Gollum from winding yourself in and out of the rollcage, your thighs will become rectangular from the persistent ministrations of the tall Recaro seat bolsters and, unless you drive everywhere in a helmet and ear defenders, you'll go deaf. Then the incessant vibration will cause your skin to overload and simply fail, leaving you an inert pink blob wearing a helmet and mewling.

There's one other slight yump in the road to pseudo-rally heroism: the entire basic tarmac kit costs 62,000 euro, or around £53,500. Did I forget to mention that? And that's before you include some of the more specific options, like the 'gravel adaptation kit', '64Mb data acquisition' upgrade, a 'bodywork spare-parts kit' and specific ECU maps for race fuel. You'll need a support truck. And possibly a chintzy gazebo. Add the cost of the base vehicle, and you're looking at a DS3 hatch worth somewhere in the region of £85,000. Without truck, gazebo or umbrella girl. Which will cause sharp intake of breath from most bank managers, followed closely by the word "No". More interesting, though explicitly not encouraged by Citroen Racing, is the fact that you could, in theory, buy any of these parts separately. You'll have to buy a couple of ECUs and be handy with a spanner, but imagine a DS3R with the race engine and 'box, diff and suspension, but a half-cage, road- biased clutch and sound-deadening. Come on, Citroen. You know you want to. And we want you to. Today. Now.

Insider Secret To A Show Car Paint Finish

Have you tried polishing a car by hand lately? If you have, you might think your car polish is defective when the real issue is your vehicle's paint. That's because automotive paint finishes have become much harder in the past few years, allowing them to last longer and resist scratching and chipping like never before.

The changes in paint technology, while very beneficial, have introduced a new problem for car owners. While it was possible to maintain automobile paintwork by hand just a few years ago, today's new paint finishes make it nearly impossible. If your vehicle's paintwork has minor scratches, swirl marks or water spot etching, you will need a buffer polisher to correct the problem. The good news is that the number one buffing machine for both home and professional use, the Porter Cable 7424, is very effective on even the most modern paint finishes, including the latest ceramic paints used by Mercedes-Benz.

The original Porter Cable Polisher and the new 7424xp are dual-action polishers. What this means is that the polishing head rotates (free-spins on its spindle) and orbits (powered by the motor) around the center spindle. A mass counterweight mechanism on the spindle dampens vibrations. This polishing action, often referred to as "random orbital" or just "orbital," totally prevents symmetrical buffing marks, paint burns and the other types of automotive finish damage that people associate with high-speed buffing machines. That means if you use the polisher as intended it's virtually impossible to damage your car, even with no experience.

This type of electric polisher closely mimics the motion of circular hand polishing. Imagine being able to make 2,500 to 6,000 tight hand circles in a single minute. That should give you a pretty good idea of how this machine does its job. Basically it works just like you do, only at super-human speed. Plus, it never gets tired!

If you have previously owned a car waxing machine that made a lot of racket, but did little else to fix the damage and restore shine, you will appreciate the brilliance of one of these buffing machines. It has all of the power needed to get the job done, yet it's small enough and light enough that it's easy to use.

The secret to using a dual action polisher with shining results is choosing the right polish and polishing pads for the job. Basically polishing pads come in three grades: cutting, polishing and finishing. A cutting pad is coarse and used to remove damage. A polishing pad has a bit if coarseness, but not much. It's used to remove very minor damage and restore full gloss. A finishing pad is very soft. It's used to polish without cutting and to apply waxes and glazes.

You must use an appropriate polish with each type of pad. Like the pads themselves, polishes have different grades of cut. A compound, for example, is a cutting polish. Compounds are rated by the level of sanding scratch they can remove. A compound designed to remove 2000 to 2500 grit sanding scratches will effectively remove swirl marks and water spots, whereas a product that can remove 1200 to 1500 grit sanding marks will remove fine scratches. If you can feel a scratch with your fingernail, you should remove it with 2000 grit wet and dry sandpaper before polishing.

If you're confused about which polish to use to remove swirl marks, fine scratches and water spots, let me recommend Meguiar's Ultimate Compound. It's probably the best consumer grade product available today, and it's easy to find at your local auto parts store.

After compounding to remove damage, you might think the finish looks great, but I recommend finishing off the job with a fine polish. Most compounds, including the new Meguiar's product, will leave just a touch of hazing in the clear coat. All it takes to remove the hazing and restore a brilliant shine is a fine paint polish. I prefer and recommend Klasse All-In-One. It's an amazing product that will produce a final finish that blows you away.

New automotive paints may be too hard to maintain by hand, but the solution is easy. A Porter Cable 7424xp gets the job done faster that you ever could by hand, and it's a quality machine that will last a lifetime.

Advice On Tinting Car Windows

If you are like most people then you want your car to look its best and that is part of the reason why you put tint on the windows. What most people don't understand is that you don't have to be a professional to install tint on your windows, you just have to know what you are doing. There are a lot of reasons to tint your windows and what some people just don't realize is that the benefits that you see is not all that it offers.

Even though there are a lot of benefits to putting tint on your windows you still need to know some stuff about doing it. One of the things that you need to know is that it is harder than just putting some colored film on a piece of glass, there are certain steps that you need to follow. Don't just start applying the film just yet, read the following tips to make sure your windows look professionally done.

Tips On Tinting Car Windows

Precut A Template - The very first thing that I would recommend is that you actually precut a template so that you know the exact size and shape of the glass prior to cutting the actual film. The whole point of doing this is to avoid having to buy more film just because you cut the first piece too small. If you have never done a car window before then you won't have the experience you need so make sure that you use the template to get the perfect size and shape that you need.

Clean The Glass - When you are about ready to put the film on the glass then you need to make sure you clean it first. If you don't clean the glass and there are fingerprints or other things on it then you will be able to see them even more clearly once the tint is on. Don't think that a little bit of dirt won't hurt because in reality it will.

Wet The Glass - When you are putting the film on you will want to wet the glass right before you do it. The reason you do this is so that the film will not adhere to the window before you have positioned it in its final spot and pushed out all the air bubbles.

When it comes to tinting your windows you need to do everything you can to make the actual application easier and that is why you do the tips outlined above. Just know that if you don't know what you are doing then try to find a website that will teach you how to tint car windows.

It is very easy to tint car windows once you know how.

Car Gadgets

Cars have changed a lot of the years, going from just a buggy, to high powered machines. Many people though, when buying a car, like to add in upgrades like leather, fancier stereo, heated seats, and many other options. But I think most of us wish we could have the same upgrades that James Bond has in his stealthy cars. With the advances of technology and the types of technology that is used in cars today, cruising like James Bond may not be as farfetched.

A new safety feature seems to be a cool gadget and safety feature, the Precrash System. There are different types of precrash systems; probably the most advanced system is that in an Audi. Their system is called "Pre-Sense Plus", the system activates in the case of a possible accident. Cars that are equipped with this system can detect a possible accident and turn on hazard lights, roll up windows, adjust seats, and even start breaking and slowing down the car for you. This is a great system to have seeing as most of them can react faster than a person can register that there is a possibility of a wreck. Some systems can even wake the driver if they happen to start falling asleep at the wheel. Not only is this a cool gadget, but also a great safety feature. Ask your dealership if they have any of these features or related features to see how you can get the system in your car, or your new car.

Another gadget that can be useful are the different smart phone or tablet apps that allow you to check how much gas you have in your car, lock or unlock your car, and even open or close your garage door without having to be next to or in your car. Craftsman has announced a set of garage door openers that can be accessed through the internet so you know that your garage door is closed, and if its not, simple, just closed it using the app. The down side about this is the garage door opener has to be hooked up with an Ethernet cable and can't function using just WiFi. Some of the smart phone apps allow you to unlock your car, turn it on, and even change the temperature in the car. This can be considered a safety feature knowing you don't have to search for your keys to get in the car, or to dig through your purse when you could just get in your car and go because the app took care of that. Of course, another great aspect is you know that all the people who walk by your when it randomly turns on are all wondering if the parking garage is haunted.

An interesting feature that is available in some cars is Blind Spot Detection Systems. These systems have small sensors that can see the common blind spots by using electromagnetic waves. The sensors are sometimes places on the side view mirrors, on the back bumpers, and anywhere else that there is a common blind spot. These detection systems can also see about 60 or so feet on either side of your car helping you be aware of cross traffic that may be behind your car when backing out. The system can also help while on the highway since it can alert you that someone may be coming up on your blind side so you don't switch lanes.

So, some of these may seem life safety features, but I think even James Bond's car would have these features and could still keep the master spy out of harm's way. There are many other types of gadgets you can get for your car, they don't all have to double as fancy safety features. However, you can check with your insurance company to see if the safety features can help your insurance rates.

How To Clean and Protect Convertible Soft-Tops

Convertibles need maintenance to remain water-tight and to keep their like-new appearance. Failure to do the essential maintenance or use of harsh household chemicals will result in hundreds of dollars of damage. A replacement soft-top will set you back $600 or more and can go over the $1,500 with installation.

The very first thing you need to know about your convertible is the type of material. Most rag tops are made using a woven polyacrylic fabric or a polyester vinyl. Cars with a woven polyacrylic fabric have a wonderful feel (like a soft canvas) and they look very classy. Polyester vinyl does not have the same high quality look, but it is economical and easy to maintain.

As you might have guessed the fabric has a tight weave to keep out the wind and rain, but they are also made to breathe. That means a fabric top is not really waterproof, but it is highly water resistant. To make the canvas material waterproof you need to treat it with a sealing and water repelling agent. Without regular treatment the fabric will allow moisture to come through and it may not release difficult stains when you clean it. The treatment also aids against slow fade from ultra violet light and acid rain damage.

Although the material is quite durable, many household cleaning products will damage your car's top. Avoid anything containing ammonia, bleach, detergent, alcohol or vinegar. They are all a sure way to kill your top and its clear vinyl window. Trust me, you don't want pain of having to replace your top because you used a household cleaner instead of a cleaner designed to do the job. This includes detergent products like Formula 409, Simple Green, etc.

One of the biggest wear factors for canvas tops is dust in the canvas. Dust settles into the weave of the material, gets into the yarn, and wears away at the fibers. Vinyl can experience premature wear from dirt, too, but it's not as big an issue. In general, you should care for your top each time you wash your car. This does not mean you need to scrub it with a cleaner each time, but a thorough rinsing with a stiff stream of water is necessary.

The recommended tool for washing is a soft scrub brush. Do not use a cloth, chenille-covered sponge or lamb's wool mitt, as they will leave lint. If your top has soil marks, stains or bird droppings, use a small upholstery brush. Do not use a scrub brush on the vinyl window. It will scratch.

To dry a canvas top I recommend using a synthetic chamois or a microfiber drying towel. Use the chamois or towel to blot the water off the surface, but never wipe. To avoid lint issues, a terry cloth towel or diaper should not be used. To dry your vinyl, a microfiber cloth is ideal. Use the microfiber on the vinyl windows, too, and you won't have issues with scratching.

As mentioned above, tops made with canvas are not waterproof. To provide waterproofing and stain resistance you must treat it with a protective spray. There are several treatments available, including 303 Products and Wolfstein's RaggTopp Protectant. These are not a ScotchgardR product. The main difference is that they contain an anti-fungal agent to prevent mold and mildew.

Although vinyl doesn't need waterproofing, vinyl tops do need protection. Using a good vinyl top protectant, you can prevent discoloration damage from road grime, pollution, salt deposits, leaf gum, and bird droppings. Vinyl tops should be treated monthly.

Before you apply protectant you car needs to be completely dry. When treating canvas, mask off your vinyl window using tape and newspaper. If overspray gets on your windows or paint it will be difficult to remove. You might find it helpful to lift the top slightly and slip newspaper or an old bed sheet between it and windshield frame. Do the same with the side windows.

Be sure to shake the protectant for a full minute before use. For best results apply two light coats. It dries faster and you get better coverage. For the best possible waterproofing, spray a third coat on the seams.

On vinyl use an applicator sponge. Never spray the protectant because the spray will go everywhere. The better way to do it is to apply the product to your foam applicator then rub it on. Allow the protectant to stand for a few minutes, then buff dry with a clean microfiber towel.

If you follow these basic guidelines, your convertible top will serve you twenty of more years while looking its best. For additional protection, especially if you part outside, consider a waterproof car cover or a custom car cover. An outdoor car cover will completely eliminate long-term issues with UV light and water damage.

History of the Automotive Clear Bra

The automotive clear bra is a urethane film that can be applied to the impact areas of cars - such as the hood, side mirrors, doors, and bumpers - to protect their paint finishes from stones, bugs and other road debris. Since it is completely transparent, paint protection film has the added benefit of not compromising a car's appearance while it protects, unlike other paint protection systems.

Clear bra origin in military use

While clear bras are now prized by many automobile enthusiasts, the technology was originally conceived for a very different purpose. The film was developed by 3M for military use during the Vietnam War, where helicopter rotor blades frequently suffered damage from flying dust and debris, even on the most routine missions. This caused malfunctions and required costly overhauls of the blades.

By installing protective film over the blades, the U.S. military was able to save large amounts of time and money. The film would suffer damage instead of the blade, and the films could be replaced much more cheaply and easily than the rotor blades.

Because of their origin, these films have sometimes been referred to as "helicopter tape," though with changes in their use, this term is becoming obsolete.

Paint protection film evolves into automotive sector

The films continued to be used by the military long after Vietnam. They proved particularly useful in the harsh conditions and dust storms seen in Operation Desert Storm.

In the 1980s, people started to see the benefit urethane film could provide to virtually any high performance vehicle, and they began to see use outside the military. Specifically, racecar drivers began adding them to their cars to protect the finishes. This helped ensure peak performance for the cars in a sport where even the tiniest advantage is crucial.

Clear bra becomes popular alternative to car bra

By the '90s, companies had begun offering invisible bras to the average consumer. Paint protection film has achieved a high degree of popularity, especially among owners of luxury cars, for its ability to preserve the factory finish of a car without compromising looks. While early versions tended to yellow with age, clear bra films sold today do not suffer any such problems and should remain invisible indefinitely.

Invisible bras are also much more convenient than the alternatives. There is no need to remove the clear bras when the owner wants to wash or wax his or her car, and the films are UV transparent, meaning there will be no uneven fading of the paint job. Removal or replacement can be done easily without fear of damaging the paint beneath, as film adhesive is designed not to harm paint finishes.

Clear bra installers must be highly trained; it can take years to master the skill. The films usually come in pre-cut kits that make the installation process smoother. However, more skilled technicians can perform custom installations, which provide much better paint surface coverage.

New advancements in material science continue to improve the auto clear bra, and with protective film's popularity increasing among car-lovers, the clear bra likely will continue to be a part of the automobile scene - albeit an invisible one - for many years to come.

Be an Individual - Make Your Car Stand Out

You may have been cruising down the road one day and viewed a vehicle in the lane beside you that was decked out in all sorts of decals. You probably wondered why a person would want to take the time to put all those stickers on their vehicle. Individuality and expression both play a part in the reasoning behind vehicle decoration and modification.

Some people like to have their vehicle look like it just rolled off the new car lot; other people believe that their vehicle should represent them and their sense of style. There is no definitive correct way to decorate a vehicle. There are many people that own vehicles, and there are many different tastes in vehicle styles. If you are into hunting, you may wish to place hunting decals or stickers on your vehicle. If you love motorcycles, you may want to decorate your vehicle with motorcycle decals or stickers. The choices are really endless when it comes to vehicle decoration and modification. You make the decision as to what decals you want to place on your vehicle.

A car that isn't decorated tends to look like all the other vehicles that are out there on the roadways. Many people don't like blending in with the crowd; they want their vehicle to stand out and be something that people really notice. These are the people who desire to put decals and/or stickers on their vehicles. They want people to see their creative side; they want their vehicle to express something about them.

Not only do people decorate and modify their vehicles due to the need to express themselves, they also do it because they feel it makes their vehicle look great. A nicely decorated or modified vehicle can look wonderful and can actually show people that you care about how your vehicle looks.

Whether you're applying decals and/or stickers to your vehicle to represent your individuality, or to just make your vehicle look nicer, be sure to pick the stickers and/or decals that you like. You are the person who is driving the vehicle; therefore, whatever stickers and/or decals you place on your vehicle should tell people a little information about you.

You can find a wide range of vinyl graphics for vehicles on online vinyl shops, which is also an easy way to browse the many different designs on offer. Using vinyl to customise your car is one of the easiest and most affordable ways of making your mark.

In the UK and Europe, you can buy vinyl vehicle decals in a wide range of designs - fantasy car decals, pin-up car graphics, skull decals, and more. Buy car stickers in the UK from Rock Artist Studios, an easy, quick, and affordable way to customise your car!

How Are Electric Motors Used in Electric Cars?

Did you know that environmentally friendly cars use electric motors rather than gasoline engines to create less pollution? Electric cars are much kinder to the environment and are perfectly suited to use in the city. These cars usually look just like regular cars from the outside but on the inside they are quite different: instead of a gasoline engine with all its exhaust pipes and coolant hoses, there is an electric motor connected to a controller.

Running a car on rechargeable power is not only kinder to the environment; it also makes the car much easier to care for. These motors do not require oil checks, tune-ups or smog checks. These cars get their power, however, from batteries which need to be recharged regularly. One perk of using these motor is that it runs pretty much silently, making for a pleasing change after the loud grumbling of a gasoline engine.

The source of power in these cars is located very close to the wheels and controls the movement the wheel axle directly. When you are driving an environmentally friendly car and press down on the accelerator information is sent to the controller telling it how much energy is need from the battery to power the car. The energy delivered is then converted into usable energy and used to drive the wheel axle. This is done smoothly, instantly and at a high torque. With an environmentally friendly car you can get a high acceleration straight from a standing speed.

The second most important part in a these cars is the controller. The controller is responsible for taking power from the batteries and delivering it to the motor. This process is aided by a pair of potentiometers which measure the force exerted on the accelerator and deliver an appropriate signal to the controller.

A variety of different methods are used to power environmentally friendly cars. AC machines are usually installed in the factory built cars. AC three phase machines are the most suited for use in high performing environmentally friendly cars. They can handle driving through hilly areas well and can maintain reasonably high speeds. AC three phase electric motors are also brushless, making them very durable and suited to heavy duty use. Conversely, DC machines, such as the series wound motor, are often preferred for use in DIY car conversions as they are much easier to install, although they don't offer the same sophistication as AC electric motors.

These electric motors are much useful in home and outside the home also, as we have read in this article. This article posted by me John K. Taylor on behalf Harrington Electric Motors. Harrington Electric Motors is an Australian distributor of Lafert Electric Motors and Servo Motors.

Car Types, Transmission and Safety

Car types

Cars can be grouped in different ways for a body type. Here is a classification:

Sedan

The most common type of car. Then there is a particular model with two or four doors where the trunk is separated from the passenger compartment and a separate trunk.

Example: Toyota Corolla, Seat Cordoba

Combi car

A car with extended roofline and more cargo space than a sedan, cargo area is accessed via a large door in the rear of the car. Car manufacturers often have their own names on their hatchback models.

Example: Volvo V70,, Renault Grand Scenic, Kia

Multi-purpose / MPV (Multi Purpose Vehicle)

A type of car, bus often similar, with more passenger space than a sedan. Flexi car is larger and often have removable seats and can thus be adapted to the need for transportation.

Example: 2008 Chrysler Grand Voyager, Ford Galaxy, Hyundai Matrix,

Sports car / coupe

A two-door car that is lower than a sedan, and sometimes only two seats. The roof slopes are usually more at the rear and can be removable or retractable.

Example:, Peugeot 307 CC, Opel Astra Twin Top, Mercedes CLK-Class

SUV / SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle)

Something between a hatchback and the real terrain, usually equipped with four-wheel drive and higher ground clearance than a regular hatchback. Car type is also sometimes called the "SUVs".

Example: Nissan X-Trail, Hyundai Santa Fe, Toyota RAV4, Volvo XC90

Gearbox

The two main types of gearbox in the car is manual and automatic. Many cars are now automatic transmission. An advantage of the automatic transmission is smooth and steady driving, which is convenient in city driving. It can also be perceived as safer because it allows the driver to be over concentrated on driving and the surrounding traffic.

A disadvantage is that the older automatic cars often pull 50-10 percent more fuel than cars with manual transmission. Many newer automatic cars, however, drag in many cases the same and in some cases less fuel than comparable cars with manual transmission. Another drawback is that most automatic cars can be towed up and running.

Cars and Safety

Most crucial to your safety that motorist is driving calmly and follow the speed limit no matter what vehicle you have.

A crash at 60 km / h corresponds to a fall from fourth floor of a house, and a crash at 80 km / h falling from the eighth floor. The human body takes a lot of damage to vehicle accidents. Even at low speeds, the risk of serious harm large. Of vulnerable road users who are hit at 30 km / h risk one in ten of being killed. At 50 km / h eight in ten at risk of being killed.

If all road users to respect the speed limit, around 125 lives saved each year.

Simple Ways to Refinish Your 22 Inch IROC Rims

If you are looking to give your car that powerful and sleek look, specific to car racing competitions, then you should consider installing 22 inch IROC rims on your vehicle. These rims have a touching history, as they were initially designed especially for a Camaro model participating in the IROC competition. Since so many car passionate people found them appealing, now the 22 inch or other sizes are available to the public. However, in order to find these rims for you automobile, you will need to do a bit of research.

Although the genuine IROC rims are quite resistant, it is important to note that in time, that attractive clear coating wears off the aluminum and hence, leaves the metal exposed to common road elements that can damage it beyond repair. One solution to keeping these rims intact and lasting for the many years to come would be to call on the help of a workshop, where you take your car and your rims for regular maintenance. Alternatively, if you know your way around you car, you can also try to refinish these rims yourself.

Since the idea of these rims is to give the impression of a brand new powerful car, the last thing you want is to scratch that perfect and sleek coating. Therefore, the best way to remove harden and resistant debris from your rims is to use different grit sandpaper and water. The first step is to use a piece of 400 grit sandpaper on which you pour a mild jet of water. This way you will ensure that the sandpaper will not damage these rims as well as prevent buildups.

In order to ensure that the surface of these rims will remain intact, the next step implies applying 800 and 1200 grit sandpapers, in that order, ensuring that you covered both the outside and inside facades of the rims. Even though you might be tempted to apply the 1200 grit sandpaper directly on these rims, that is a bad idea as the scratches and chips will not be covered properly. Remove the sandpaper and rinse the surface, however, do not take your car for a spin until these rims are dried completely.

While it is recommended that you leave the paint and coating job of these rims to a professional, you can try do it yourself if you are careful enough. The trick to painting these rims properly is to spray the paint from a distance of approximately six to eight inches from its surface. In addition, you should it is advisable that you ensure to paint them evenly and apply thin coats, as otherwise even the smallest line will be visible once the paint dries. After you apply paint or coating, you should leave these rims to dry for about three hours before you can handle them.

How to Get the Best of Your New 4x4 When Driving Off Road?

Familiarity with the features and controls of a new 4WD vehicle is key to getting the best of it when venturing off road; plenty of drivers have come unstuck looking at the 4x4 logo on their new car and thinking they can drive it anywhere.

In particular pay attention to how the 4WD system operates and if it requires any driver input, such as selecting 2WD or 4WD, changing between high or low ratio, manual differential locking or whether the front hubs are freewheeling type where the hub must be locked by hand.

Tyre choice is very important to off road performance. Even the most capable 4WD platform can run into problems off road when fitted with street oriented tyres, as is the case with nearly all new 4x4 vehicles, but by the same token, dedicated off road tyres will have less traction on wet tarmac and be considerably noisier than road tyres; there is always a compromise.

Wheel size too is a factor; large diameter rims with low profile tyres look good in the city but have very little off road capability, and off road tires may not be available to fit them. When possible, fitting mud-terrain (MT) or all-terrain (AT) tyres will dramatically increase the off road car ability of any new 4WD vehicle and will provide the most flexibility. By checking the vehicle manufacturer's recommended range of tyre sizes and choosing an off road tyre as tall and as wide as possible, not only will traction be improved, but the taller tyres will also increase the ground clearance.

Upgrading shock absorbers to units designed for off road use, while not strictly necessary, will improve handling and compensate for taller heavier off road car tyres where fitted.

Control is the name of the game when driving an off road car. It is easy to spin the wheels by applying to much power when driving on loose surfaces but this should be avoided. Sharp objects hidden by a soft surface layer increase the chance of tyre damage during wheel-spin, while spraying gravel and rocks around will chip that new paint finish all the sooner.

Traversing soft surfaces such as sand is better accomplished by airing down the tyres to 1/3 of their normal pressure. Doing so will make the vehicle track in a straight line and use less petrol when compared with driving on fully pressurised tyres which sink deeper into the ground and reduce directional stability, making the vehicle wander even when the steering wheel is held firmly. A small 12v air compressor is a wise investment to re-inflate the tyres quickly when firmer ground or tarmac is encountered after driving in sand.

The chances of getting a puncture are much higher when travelling off road so check the spare wheel beforehand. If it is a space-saving donut type it is well worth acquiring a full size spare fitted with the same type of tyre as the other wheels. Standard equipment jacks may also be inadequate for off road tyre changing. A high lift jack makes changing a wheel much easier.

Depending on the area, off road trail driving may involve fording streams. Always check the maximum depth at which a new 4WD vehicle can be driven in water and what measures, such as closing axle vents, need to be taken before attempting stream crossings.

Driving on rocky or very uneven terrain requires awareness of underbody clearance and front and rear overhang to prevent being hit by a rock or high-centered on a bump. If not already fitted at the factory, protective guards can be bolted to the most vulnerable areas such as the engine sump, differential housings etc. to prevent them being damaged.

Swapping the front bumper for a sturdier aftermarket item, or fitting a set of bull-bars helps prevent damage from overhanging branches or rocks and, for when the terrain gets really tough, allows a winch to be fitted more easily.

Awesome Custom Paint and Design for All of Your Toys

Have you ever seen that custom painted car or bike go by that you just couldn't take your eyes off from? Well if you share the same passion that I do for something unique, you know that feeling when you see a great work of automobile art. I have a custom mustang that I enjoy driving and just looking at it while its parked gets me going. The fact that there are so many different ways to make something unique and your own gets my blood pumping. Every time I see a custom vehicle, helmet, golf cart, or any other toy you may have I feel like a kid in a candy store.

I do believe with today's economy many people are keeping what they have and not purchasing new toys.

The best way to feel like you have something new for a fraction of the price is to customize something you already own. I love the feeling of something new like many people out there. I also feel the pinch of making your money stretch just a little bit farther than before. I lost my last job due to the economy forcing the company I worked for to close its doors. It gets you down, but I was able to feel great when I had custom paint work done on my old motorcycle to make it look new and exciting. I rode the new painted bike to an interview and landed a great job with a very large company.

It may be totally crazy to think that my newly improved bike made me get my new job, but I believe it. I felt so much better riding that custom bike down the road that my confidence was boosted to the level of perfection. When I walked into the interview I had a glow that made me stand out. I was told by the Human resource department that I was chosen over a big group of people interviewed because I was a very positive person. I could be wrong but having that rad bike to ride sure makes me feel like I'm in a good positive mood.

You may ask, how does an airbrush work? Like anything that delivers a fine spray of paint or solvent, it uses Bernoulli's principle. Air moving at higher velocity has lower pressure. If this air stream happens to be near but above a solvent (e.g. paint), the solvent will be drawn upwards, towards the fast moving air.

When it gets to that stream of air, the solvent gets broken up into fine particles, and is blown in the direction of the airstream. The basic principle is very simple, and spraying itself is not hard. It does take some practice and good technique to turn out finely painted art.

Is Your Car At Risk Of Early Paint Failure?

Amazing improvements have been made in automotive paint finish technology in the past ten years. Unfortunately, some of the benefits of new paint finishes, which include ceramic paint technologies, have fueled a troubling trend at car dealerships. In particular, many customers are being told that their new vehicle's paint finish is maintenance-free and does not require waxing.

Although the improvements in coating technology provide a paint finish that is exceptionally durable, it still oxidizes and it's not impervious to environmental hazards, including acid rain, bird droppings, insect remains or hard water spots. Even the latest ceramic paint finishes can't withstand the effects of acidic or alkaline contamination. A coating of car wax provides a necessary layer of expendable protection.

While not all car dealers promote a care-free finish, many up-sell their customers into a life-time or 5-year paint treatment package. While these dealer applied upgrades are beneficial, a life-time paint treatment is marketing at its finest. The technology to create a multi-year paint treatment (also called a paint sealant) that protects under all environmental and exposure conditions does not exist.

What customers are actually buying from their car dealer is a "paint protection system" that requires regular maintenance. Customer who do not carefully read the fine print of the contract may not realize that they must bring their vehicle back to the dealership for periodic maintenance (re-application of the protection). If the maintenance schedule is not maintained, the dealer is under no obligation to fix paint finish damage cause by oxidation.

Another clever marketing trick is the claim by small boutique brands that European car paint systems, as an example, are require special waxes or will benefit from a wax made specifically for their paint. Based on my own research, and years of experience, I see very little difference. The hype about "special paint" simply isn't true.

The truth is that all modern, clear coat paint finishes require the same care. The notion that a car wax can be formulated to benefit a specific make, model and color of car, such as a Porsche 911 or a BMW Z3, is marketing guff at its finest. Beware of any business making such claims.

Here's the reality. More than eighty-five percent of all cars manufactured since 2005 use a multi-stage, have a clear coat finish that's provided by one of three automotive paint manufacturers. What that means is the color layer is protected by a layer of clear paint. The clear coat finish requires regular cleaning, polishing to remove swirl marks, water spots and fine scratches, and wax for protection. These paint finishes are not fussy about the car wax you use as long as it does not contain heavy abrasives.

In most climate conditions experts agree that waxing your vehicle three or four times a year is optimal. If you wax less frequently than every six months your paint finish will likely show early signs of damage from oxidation and environmental conditions. You can see clear coat failure on vehicle everywhere. They have white or cloudy patches, sometime covering an entire body panel. The solution to this problem is a complete repaint of the affected area.

There are literally hundreds of car wax products on the market. Very little has changed over the past ten with the exception of of clear polymer sealant. The wipe-on, walk away paint sealants, such as Optimum Polymer Technologies' Opti-Seal are a huge step forward in making car care easier.

What Should I Consider When Getting Tinted Windows?

For many people, window tinting is associated with young car enthusiasts and those who want to have an image of mystery. Actually, tinted windows are a very important role in protecting yourself and your car against the harmful rays of the sun, vandalism as well as added protection in a crash. The film used for tinted glass is a polyester substrate with a scratch-resistant coating on one side and a transparent adhesive on the reverse. When installed with tinted windows, there are several factors to consider.

Window tinting first burst onto the scene in the 1960s. Since its introduction, tinted glass has become a huge market with a wide range of colors and tones. There are two basic types of tinted glass - metal film performance, providing a reflective surface, and non-reflective of traditional film. Tinted windows are available in a wide array of colors, and the most common are bronze, silver, gold and basic black.

The benefits are enormous when it comes to tinted windows. Blocking 65% of the sun's heat and a huge 99.9% of ultraviolet (UV) rays, tinting goes the distance when it comes to a return on investment. It not only protects the interior and furnishings of the vehicle, but also protect your eyes from glare as well as your skin from sun damage. Window film also enhances the strength your vehicle's glass by holding shattered glass in place.

When you begin to look at your window tinting options, you should first research what is legal in your area. Each U.S. state has separate laws governing tinted windows. Many countries worldwide have banned the window tinting completely for reasons of public safety. Most professional companies specializing in tinted windows should be familiar with the law in your city and can give you a certificate of compliance in case you are pulled over. Fines for all tinted windows can run anywhere from $50 to $500 depending on the local enforcement protocols as well as what aspects of your tinting are not up to scratch.

Some states allow the tint on each window of the car if you have side mirrors, while others prohibit tinting the windshield and two front windows. The color is also legislated and the most common prohibited colors are red and amber. The darkness or opacity of the tint is also a factor in many local laws. This is measured by what we call visible light (VLT%), defined as the percentage of visible light that is through the tint. Many states make exceptions for medical conditions that require heavy protection against the sun. Once you have researched what is legal, you can look at the options and choose the one that best fits your car while still within the legal limits.

Most people agree that the window tinting best left to professionals. It not only looks better, but it will last longer and are guaranteed. Although tinted windows can done for yourself, a professional touch will always result in a smoother finish as well as a job with a guarantee. They have the tools and experience to get the job done right the first time.

Generally speaking, window tinting is a wonderful aftermarket enhancement when applied correctly and professionally. Tinted windows can even make your car a more attractive option on the secondhand market should you choose to sell it down the road. Always keep any paperwork associated with aftermarket or maintenance work you have had done to your vehicle so that prospective buyers can see what you've had done and, in the case of tinting, can be sure that the tint meet legal requirements. Going through the time it takes to both research the laws as well as finding a quality tinting shop will ensure your window tint remains a benefit and not a liability.

Why Accessories Enhance A Car And Protect Value

Car owners have come a long way from the basic ownership of a vehicle when Ford offered basic models produced by his factory. Car enthusiasts from all over the world spend time looking for items which can enhance the appearance of a vehicle, from SUV seat covers to the most up-market of luggage carriers. Yet it is not necessary for a person to be an enthusiast to want to improve the look and feel of the car, because buying the right accessory can not only do that, but they can also preserve the value of the car, making it more saleable in the future.

Starting with just the basics, exterior accessories will improve the overall look of the vehicle, from alloy wheels to spoilers or rubber fittings on the bumpers, but some of these items can be too expensive for the price of the car, and will not improve the driving experience, or make the car more durable. Interior items do not improve the car as much for the external observer, but they can help to make the driver and family happier. SUV seat covers, for example, will protect the original seats of the car from drinks or food stains, engine stains if the car needs work, or the simple dirt that most people accumulate during a day's work. Luggage carriers can be important too, since they indicate that the car is more versatile and adaptable.

People who spend a lot of time in their vehicle know that these small interior accessories improve the experience of driving in a way that their cost does not suggest. The interior accessories can help to give the car a more sporty look, but also encourage comfort and convenience, both of which are important in a car of any kind. Luggage carriers are better for family cars, where parents may need extra room for children's suitcases; but they can also be used by people who travel a great deal, and often carry two or three suitcases with them. Adding luggage carriers will, of course, give you more room on the inside of the car for other items.

As cars have become an everyday item for most of the population, novelty SUV seat covers and other accessories have become fashionable. The leather gear stick cover is another accessory which many people enjoy putting on their vehicle, giving them a sense of individuality which is important to people who want to be comfortable with their car.
